SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sister of Providence Mary Caritas, former president of Mercy Medical Center, today announced her endorsement of Mary E. Hurley for Governor’s Council in the Eighth District.
“I have known Mary Hurley for over 40 years, I worked closely with her during her terms as Mayor of the city of Springfield and have also observed her when she served as a judge and practiced law,” said Sister of Providence, Mary Caritas. “During her terms as Mayor, she showed great concern for those who were poor and disenfranchised, she is a good manager and when she left office – she did so with honor and praise for a job well done.”
In her endorsement, Sister Caritas explained the great deal of admiration that Hurley had gathered throughout her years in public service, “She won the respect of those both in and out of government because of her honesty and fairness.
“Mary is a good listener, she is decisive and has courage to stand by her decisions even in the face of objections,” Caritas said. “I believe strongly that Mary Hurley will be an excellent member of the Governor’s Council. She has a proven record and is highly committed and hard working.”
Hurley expressed appreciation for Caritas’s endorsement. “I am both humbled and honored by Sister Caritas’ kind words. I have a great deal of respect for all of the work that she has done throughout our community,” said Hurley. “If elected I hope to bring the same enthusiastic spirit and advocacy for western Massachusetts that she has for so many years.”
