SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Mayor of the City of North Adams, Richard (Dick) Alcombright, today announced his endorsement of Judge Mary Hurley (ret.), candidate for Governor’s Council in the 8th District.
“Very early on in her candidacy, Judge Hurley reached out to set up a meeting, she wanted to discuss the ways in which the Governor’s Council could help us here in North Adams and the problems that we were facing,” said Mayor Richard Alcombright. “I was thrilled that someone from Hampden County was interested in learning about our challenges and even more thrilled when I learned about her experience as both a Mayor and a Judge.
“We need candidates who have experience in facing difficult problems. She genuinely understands that we have a shortage of judges and judicial personnel here in western Massachusetts. Mary was working as a judge – facing these shortages day-in-and-day-out. She also understands the importance of drug courts here in Berkshire County and is ready to stand up for us out in Boston. I am happy to offer my endorsement for Mary Hurley for Governor’s Council. I am confident that she has the right experience and is ready, willing and able to stand up for our needs.”
Richard (Dick) J. Alcombright is the 25th Mayor of the City of North Adams. He attended Southern Vermont College and has decades of public service experience, including 19 years as a school committee member and further experience as a city councilor.
“I am humbled to have received Mayor Alcombright’s endorsement,” said Hurley. “I understand the challenges that mayors face every day, as he has in the City of North Adams. One of the major reasons I am running for Governor’s Council is because we are facing a shortage of judges and we need a candidate who is going to stand up for this region. When I first met with Mayor Alcombright he affirmed what I had been hearing – we simply have a lack of judges to administer justice swiftly and fairly. I know the problem, I faced the problem every day during my tenure as a District Court Judge, and unlike my predecessor, I will stand up for western Massachusetts.”
