Shannon O’Brien Announces Endorsement of Mary E. Hurley, Candidate for Massachusetts Governor’s Council
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Former State Legislator and State Treasurer, Shannon O’Brien, today announced her support for Mary Hurley, candidate for Governor’s Council.
Shannon O’Brien was elected as the Massachusetts State Treasurer from 1999 to 2003, becoming the first woman to be elected in Massachusetts to statewide office. She also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from the second Hampshire district, 1987 to 1993 and then in the Massachusetts State Senate from the Hampden and Hampshire district, 1993 to 1995.
“When I first learned that Mary was running for office I was thrilled. The O’Brien and Hurley families have a long history of friendship and the Hurleys supported both me in my candidacies for office as well as my father Eddie O’Brien as a member of the Governor’s Council for the eighth district. Mary has long been a pioneer in the world of public service, having served two terms as the mayor of Springfield as well as almost 20 years as a judge. I am glad that she has decided to come out of retirement for this important office,” said Shannon O’Brien. “I know that Mary will do a fantastic job, she has first-hand knowledge of how to best evaluate candidates for judgeships, as well as clerkships and her former stint as an elected official gives her the right experience in representing the district she is elected to serve.”
“Shannon’s support for my campaign means a great deal to me, she is a trailblazer in the world of women and public service and I have long admired her enthusiasm and leadership,” said Hurley. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the same constituents that she served in her role as an elected official.”
Members of the Governor’s Council are elected to two-year terms representing eight different geographical districts across the Commonwealth. The council meets weekly to record advice on the governor’s judicial nominees. The council also approves appointments of notaries public and justices of the peace, certifies the results of statewide elections and authorizes treasury expenditures.
The eighth district of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council encompasses Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire Counties and the town of Royalston in Worcester County.
